Botswana's Okavango Delta, a game-rich wetland paradise located within the arid Kalahari Desert, has to be Africa's most incredible wildlife and wilderness sanctuary.
Resting within a desert, between shallow fault lines at the end of the Great African Rift Valley, the Okavango is low on annual rainfall, however, each year floodwater from the moist African highlands about a thousand meters away flows into the delta. These floodwaters flow from their catchment southwards and into the Kalahari to create a unique wetland region - Okavango - that supports and sustains a huge diversity of African wildlife. Apart from the beauty of the wetland habitat, game viewing is excellent all-year, though the rainy season from December through March is best avoided. The heart of the Okavango Delta is the Moremi Game Reserve where all the major habitats and ecotones of the Okavango are preserved. Around the Moremi Game Reserve are large private reserves (concessions) leased out to safari companies under strict guidelines and carrying capacities, thus the luxury camps are small and intimate. These private concessions offer the best wildlife safari experiences with massive tracts of pristine parkland and exclusivity. One can go out all day in some areas and not see another soul, besides the wildlife on the Okavango savannah. Varied activities are offered at Okavango; Safaris by boat and mokoro are the best way to see the water areas, while game drives and night drives by vehicle are best for tracking animals.
